Weight

The Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTi Ecoflex with a Sterling Europa 540 with an actual weight of 1452 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Opel is in general good. And also the weight of the Sterling with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 152 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

David reviewed a Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTi Ecoflex:

"Actually the match is nearer 90% than the figures quoted by the website - small differences in quoted figures and the gross permissible train weight is 3936Kg. Yes it's over the recommended 85% but with the strong engine, it's an acceptable compromise.
Had my first two tows over Easter with this outfit, having changed from a Volvo v50 to this car. Took the outfit from Sheffield to Oxford and back (as well as collecting the van from storage and bringing it home for prep for the season.) Being a 160Bhp, it has loads of grunt for good towing and overtaking. It felt stable and the car was definitely in charge, not the 'van. I had to do a fair bit of gear changing as it is an Ecoflex which has 'taller' gears, but most of the motorway was done in 5th gear, occasionally 6th on downhill stretches. Didn't calculate the MPG but it seemed pretty good overall. Plenty of space in the car boot so great for packing lots of stuff into the car and keeping the 'van light. Only issues were that again because I live on a steep 12% hill with traffic lights and a bus route, there's alot of hill starts to be expected. Managed to hill start from the lights with only a slight wheel spin, but could have done with the revs kicking in earlier, Also had a bus coming down hill looking rather determined so had to stop for him - hill started again ok but with a minor wheel spin. Hill starting with a van on the back, and an electronic parking brake take some getting used to - I'd still prefer a real handbrake so I control getting the revs up before releasing the brake. With the electronic brake, you have to have a foot on the foot brake to release the electronic parking brake which is inconvenient when you need that foot to be revving the engine up. Hill start assist which stops you rolling back doesn't hold long enough. Answer is to minimise the times I bring the van home, and just work from storage instead. "
