Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 74%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 83%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 161 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Rob Davies reviewed a Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTi:

"Plenty of power from this Vauxhall / Opel insignia 160 hp on tap is enough to do a convincing job . Sixth gear needs speeds of 63mph else the revs are too low . I feel happier towing in 5th at a steady 60mph. Hard to fault this combination it returns 35mpg towing and 42-45 mpg solo . Downsides - wheels spin too easily on wet grass, gearing on 2nd gear isn't ideal find myself dropping into 1st on a rolling start won't pull in 2nd till 11mph . Oh yes the electronic handbrake is a pain when towing it feels slow to release? Although the hill start part is ok when you get used to it . I have also towed a coachman amara (1600kg loaded) the car did well with it plenty of power but I reckon it must have been close to 95 per cent match . I recommend the sports tourer over the hatchback the extra headroom in the rear & extra bootspace come in handy makes it a lot more practical "
