Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 74%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 60 - 70 kg.
  • Towball limit is 55 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 178 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Paul Green reviewed a Opel Meriva 1.6:

"The meriva pulls ok but you soon know how much lack of power you have going up hills even a mild gradient will start to slow down.
Even so it pulls on a 26mpg so not to bad
But have sadley to say in the verge of changing car for a 2.0 dcti focus cmax as its basically the same size car but has a towing limit of 1500kg."
