The towing limit is exceeded by 381 kg!
It is not allowed to drive with this Sprite.
Make sure the towing limit is correct.

We now give advice based on the assumption that the legal maximum towing weight is higher for your car and that the car should be allowed to tow this caravan!

The Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 Hdi aut. with a Sprite Quattro FB with an actual weight of 1561 kg is a match suitable for most journeys, sometimes with some limitations.

The motor preformance of the Citroen is in general sufficient. But the weight of the Sprite with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy, but no problem if the caravan is well loaded and the driving speed is not too fast.

Actual Weights

Weight

  • The towing limit is exceeded by 381 kg (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 85%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 97%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 - 85 kg.
  • Towball limit is 50 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 131 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

geddy reviewed a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 Hdi aut.:

"I have the 1.6HDi EGS Grand Picasso. It has a max towing limit of 1180kg, which is rather low for such a big car. The 1.6HDi engine pulls our 1150kg van well. It is a little slow moving off at roundabouts and pulling up long inclines, but never sounds like it's struggling. The electronic handbrake copes with steep hill starts very well. The EGS gearbox is convenient, but mine is very jerky - in hindsight I would recommend the manual transmission. I have also found that the clutch burns very quickly when reversing the van up even slight inclines. Therefore I have doubts about the long-term reliability of EGS for towing. The high kerbweight of the Grand Picasso makes it very stable - I have never felt a twitch, even when being overtaken by large vehicles or on windy days. The achilles heel of this car is the low noseweight limit - only 50kg. Our 1150kg Lunar Chateau pitches uncomfortably on uneven road surfaces with such a low noseweight. Increasing the noseweight above the limit and loading the back of the car helps a lot with stability, but this isn't a good solution.

In summary - a very stable towcar that pulls well within its limits, but crippled by low towing weight and noseweight limits. Only suitable for lightweight vans."
