The Ford Focus C-Max 1.8 TDCi with a Standaard Caravan with an actual weight of 1200 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Ford is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Standaard Caravan with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Ford is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 71%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 81%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 182 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Clive Dawson reviewed a Ford Focus C-Max 1.8 TDCi:

"We've had the car for over 2yrs (2006 model) and tow an Abbey Aventura 314. The car is fully ladened with two folding cycles, full awning and all the usual gear and it tows like a dream except on poor roads (near home)when the firm suspension can unsettle the caravan a little, but on the other hand on smoother roads it creates stable towing even on twisting and/or undulating roads. On main roads and motorways it can be difficult staying within the speed limit such is the pulling power of the engine and I am impressed with this car as a tow car - it is the first Ford I have ever owned in over forty years of driving. I am however, less impressed with Ford's attitude when a second power steering unit failed in less than 4000 miles and therefore it could very well be the only Ford I own."
