Weight

  • The towing limit of the Volkswagen is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 75%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 84%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 157 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

P Stanyer reviewed a Volkswagen Passat 2.0 BiTDI 4M:

"The Passat Estate GT 2.0 BiTDi 240bhp 4Motion with 7 speed DSG is an amazing tow car. Our previous car, xtrail 170bhp manual was very capable, but I always felt you had to plan ahead, despite plenty of torque. The passat makes the xtrail seem silly. Very stable, truck loads of torque, and a very responsive gear box. We just got back from a trip, and the passat was holding 50 in 7th at 1200 rpm pulling the van and all our caboodle
Hill starts are no problem. The electric hand brake has no issue holding the unit on steep hills. With 5 of us in the car + dog and crate, 4 bikes on the roof and a suitably loaded Avante 576, I have yet to complain about either the car or caravan. The 4motion provide loads of traction, and it very helpful on loose material/hill starts.

The only thing I would say is that the passat is very low which makes hitching up on any incline a fiddle if the jockey wheel is down any reasonable amount of distance.

However the tow ball electrically tucks under the car, has integrated 13 pin electrics, and the camera/trailer assist system make hitching and pitching simple.

I have driven the 190 passat and that is also very powerful and I am sure capable. "
