Weight

The Renault Laguna 1.6 16v with a Caravelair Antares Luxe 416 with an actual weight of 1000 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Renault is in general sufficient. And also the weight of the Caravelair with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Renault is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 65%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 75%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 65 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 208 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

philippe reviewed a Renault Laguna 1.6 16v:

"It's not exactly an antares luxe but a brasilia 420 (same weight / size) towed by a laguna nevada 16v 1,6 110hp.there is no problem on flat roads, but on hill roads the speed can falls under 70 kmh.consumsion is about 11/12 L on motorway at 90 kmh.some problems to start on steep roads (lack of traction) : front whell are sometimes crying...very stable outfit (especialy with stabilizer). In short:acceptable outfit if most of the trip is flat, lack of power if steep roads. "
