The towing limit is exceeded by 50 kg!
It is not allowed to drive with this Caravan.
Make sure the towing limit is correct.

We now give advice based on the assumption that the legal maximum towing weight is higher for your car and that the car should be allowed to tow this caravan!

The Opel Zafira 1.6 with a Caravan leeg: 1000 kg with an actual weight of 1200 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Opel is in general sufficient. And also the weight of the Caravan with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Weight

  • The towing limit is exceeded by 50 kg (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 71%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 80%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 182 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Mark reviewed a Opel Zafira 1.6:

"Ok so don't expect me to rave about how good this combination is. It coped with cruising & steady hills OK but you had to really work the Zaf hard. Where it really falls down is traction. As soon as the back end of the car is loaded (even with careful attention to nose weight) the already light front wheels become positively feather weight. Also on reversing the clutch just dose not seam to be up to the job making some smashing burning smells on even moderate effort. But as this was a stop gap car for this van it was not really too much of an issue."
