Weight

The Volvo V70 2.4D aut. with a Lunar Lexon 585 SI with an actual weight of 1380 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Volvo is in general very good. And also the weight of the Lunar with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is pretty good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Volvo is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 72%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 81%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 168 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Colin Keeper reviewed a Volvo V70 2.4D aut.:

"I have returned to caravanning after a break of some 10 yrs. The power weight ratio appears to be very good with plenty of power reserves. However, being front wheel drive can a problem when puling away on slope when wet and on camp site in same conditions; the only saving grace is the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control which is standard feature of the new V70; an absolute necessity in my opinion. It may well be that I am may not have the loading of the van balance correctly ( I will be more precise next time) but the van was nudging the rear of the V70 on bends when cruising at or about the legal limit on A and B roads. On motorways with cruise control on, no problems at all, fuel consumption better than expected. Towing through the Cotswolds recently was an absolute delight. I have not had a chance at any serious hill climbs or hill starts, but current experience, I will be surprised if any real issue are presented; that said my Volvo is an automatic, which should hill starts very easy. I will be happy to add to this report as my experience grows with the rig grows."
