Weight

The Fiat Doblo 1.9 MultiJet with a Bailey Ranger 460/4 with an actual weight of 1194 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Fiat is in general more than sufficient. And also the weight of the Bailey with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Fiat is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 73%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 84%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 175 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Andrew Moss reviewed a Fiat Doblo 1.9 MultiJet:

"Generally they are a fairly good match. Best performance is over smaller roads or A roads wher the pair are pretty lively. I generally have to use 4th gear over these roads as I really need to be keeping up a regular over 50mph to use 5th successfully. In fair to good conditions I can easily keep a steady 60mph on the motorway but if I am going into a strong wind or heavy rain I find it difficult and I could really do with more power. Consumption is fair/poor in my opinion between 27 and 33 depending on conditions. I used to get better 30 to 36 in my old Doblo which had the old JTD engine and only 105 bhp. I would be keen to hear their peoples opnion on the Doblo touring. Hope this is some help."
