Weight

The Ford Mondeo 1.8 16v with a Sprite Alpine 2 with an actual weight of 1179 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Ford is in general sufficient. And also the weight of the Sprite with a User Payload (166 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Actual Weights

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Ford is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 74%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 173 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

RUSSELL LANGTON reviewed a Ford Mondeo 1.8 16v:

"car has sufficient pulling power, i find that most of the guts of the car are in 3rd gear, does struggle slightly on hills due to lack of nose weight on car, 5th gear is not useable under 55 mph, but at 60mph on dual carriageways the car runs great in 5ty gear and averages about 30 mpg, i found that i needed a drop plate on the car to lower the caravan to stop BOBBING as the caravan was rear heavy due to end kitchen, apparently very common problem on the mk 2 mondeo as the towbar goes through the bumper and not under it(mk1 and mk3 i've seen). hope this helps with any other mondeo mk2 owners, believe me! Buy a drop plate and lower your towbar, get 65kg nose weight on the van and feel the difference!!!."
