The Ford Galaxy 2.3i 16v with a Lunar Clubman 530-4 with an actual weight of 1350 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Ford is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Lunar with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Ford is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 68%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 76%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 186 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Miro reviewed a Ford Galaxy 2.3i 16v:

"i've been pulling my galaxy 2.3 petrol with Abi Award Globestar 1991( empty weight 925kg ) very well from UK to Poland for about 1100 miles, before trip i was really scarry how as the car can survive, but was really ok, i want to mention that we was 2 in car and inside was without seats because we had about 300 kg our staff, and also about another 250-300 kg in caravan so total weight caravan + car was 3300 kg - amazing. 80% of trip was using 5th gear, sometimes in motorway goes to 4th gear, just in Belgium i was going to 3th but there was hill in motorway to 350m, bad point only was fuel - 19 mpg on all trip but it was so heavy to pull, but basically RECOMMEND Ford Galaxy at all !!!
