= 16%The Ford Explorer is ideal for towing the Bailey Senator Louisiana, with an ideal 77% match and enough torque to pull even on the toughest inclines.
Hooked up this is a big rig and could be quite imposing, however the Explorer only notices the Caravan when pulling away where it will hold in the lower gears until it reaches a suitable crusing speed. Once these are reached you can watch the rev counter drop off to only 1500 rpm when towing at 50mph and under 2000 rpm at motorway 60 mph.
What I find good is the abilty of the Explorer due to its torque range to stay in the 5th (or overdive) gear and continue to pull on hills. This said even more power is needed then a gentle press on the accelerator will drop you down a gear an give you that etra you need especially if you are overtaking. On motorways the rig cruises as if there is no van so beware its easy to forget you have all that extra on the back.
Fule consumption; in this day and age of over £1.00 a ltre the Explorer is a thirsty beast even without the van on the back turning in for me at best 24 mpg. What is noticeable to me is there is very little change when towing, so if you use the car as day to day transport then going away would hold no fears.
Overall the Explorer is my ideal vehicle for towing the Louisiana, having towed it with my Jaguar S type and got horrendous fuel consumption, I would recomend it to anyone. Major down points are obviously no re-sale value and fuel consumption but the plus points of comfortable towing, and no weight worries outway this in my view.

= 17%The Explorer is getting old but with only 70k on the clock, what can I get to better it? The stated danger of forgetting what we have on the back is something that although true we will accept. Consumption is poor but there are many the same. I have decided to keep the rig and suffer the joys!

= 16%Have just come back from a journey of 235 miles towing my Abbey Spectrum and found the Explorer to be a fantastic tow vehicle easilly a big improvement on my previous 4x4's like the Shogun and Trooper. The power delivery is good and the automatic box faultless, the only down point being mpg,i averaged 22mpg towing and about the same solo.Am enjoying this vehicle and wont be selling for many years to come.A true 4x4 in every respect.

= 16%I have had my Explorer for 6years and it is still only 80k on the clock. The plugs may need to be changed in another 40K. The servicing low cost as it is an American Ford. They have sold I understand to be over 10 million. Pulling my Heritage ie 37cwt is easy. THe awd in low nothing stops it even with the van . I have used it to pull it off many a muddyu field. Difficult situation are easy I had to drive up narrow road bank to advoid missing a Jag. At its higest point I was well above the Jags bonnet and the driver thought I was going to drive over him . But he got by with room to spare.
They are a really good 4x4 ( It was developed from a truck )
